Lib, with a capital L in a newspaper, is the written short form of liberal — the political party or that political label. In Britain you will see Lib Dems for the Liberal Democrats. Though actually the same letters do not always point to the same camp: in Australia the Liberal Party is the more conservative big party, which shocks students who learned American English, where “liberal” usually means the left. In casual American talk, “lib” (often small letters, and often ) can mean a person with left-leaning views. Other short forms look the same — lib. for library, or Women's Lib for women's liberation — but this entry is liberal, not those.
