Lewdness is the behaviour or the quality of being crude about sex: rude jokes, rude movements, rude talk or pictures that push sex at people. News stories and school rules use the noun when they name the problem as a whole, not one single lewd act. It is formal and blaming; nobody boasts of their lewdness in polite company. Though actually an older English sense could still echo “being ”, that old sense is dead. If a joke only went a little too far, lewdness is already too heavy a word.
