    Levantine names the same eastern Mediterranean stretch of land that older books call the Levant: the coast and countries around Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and parts of Turkey. You will see “the Levantine” used for that region. In real writing, though, Levantine is even more often the word for things of that shore — Levantine cooking, a Levantine city, Levantine Arabic — and it can also name a person from those lands. Like Levant, it is a historian’s and cook’s word more than a news word; today’s speakers usually name the country. The exact edge is a little fuzzy, the same as the Levant itself.
