The Levant is an old name for the lands at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea — roughly today’s Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, and parts of Turkey. Writers sometimes fold in Jordan as well. It is not a country and it has no exact border; different books draw it a little differently. You will meet the word in history, archaeology, and cooking more than in everyday news, where people usually name the countries. As a place label it feels old-fashioned, but it is still useful when someone wants one word for that whole eastern shore. The capital letter matters: this is a place name. The idea behind the name is “the east” — the side where the sun rises.
組成Borrowed from French levant (“rising”, the sun’s point of rising), from lever (“to rise”), from Latin levō (“to rise”), from levis (“light, not heavy”). So: the east, where the sun comes up.
