In music, legato means you play or sing so that one note joins the next, with no little hole of silence in between. The sound feels tied into one long line. You will see it on the page, often as a curved line over the notes; singers, violin players, and piano players all use it. People also use it as a noun for a stretch of music played that way: “a beautiful legato.” The opposite idea is staccato, where each note is short and separate. It is an Italian word English kept for music, the way it kept piano and forte. Outside music, English almost never uses it.
