    A ligament is a strong, slightly band inside the body. It is not a muscle. Ligaments tie bone to bone at a joint, so a knee or ankle keeps a sensible shape when you run and turn. Some ligaments also hold an organ in place. When sport reports say someone has torn a ligament, this band has ripped — it hurts, and healing can be slow. Doctors and use the word all the time; ordinary people meet it after an injury. It is a calm body-science word, not slang.
