A lectureship is a teaching post at a British university — the job itself, not the person and not the talk. If you hold a lectureship, your title is Lecturer, and you teach, mark work, and usually do research as well. The important thing for students is that this is a British system word, and the level it names is not what the English suggests. In Britain a lecturer is a permanent academic staff member, roughly what Americans call an assistant professor — a real career post, often the first permanent job someone gets after a PhD. It is not a junior helper. Above it come Senior Lecturer, Reader, and Professor, and in Britain 'Professor' is a high rank that most academics never reach, not a general word for any university teacher. So 'She's got a lectureship at Edinburgh' is good news being announced: a proper job, hard to get. The -ship ending does the same work here as in friendship or membership — it turns a person or role into the state or position of being that thing. You will meet the word most often in the phrases get a lectureship, be appointed to a lectureship, and hold a lectureship, and in job advertisements. Countries that took their university system from Britain — Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, India — use it the same way. American universities do not use the word for this; there, 'lecturer' usually means someone hired to teach without a research post or a permanent contract, which is a much weaker position.
