A lecherous man shows that he wants women sexually in a way that feels ugly, greedy, and unwelcome — a look that stays too long, a smile that is not kind, talk that makes the other person want to step back. It is a strongly negative word, a little old and literary now, and you meet it more in books, films, and careful complaint than in casual chat. It almost always describes a man, or a man's look, grin, or manner; using it of a woman is possible but rare. It is not a playful way to say someone finds another person attractive. It says the desire is shown, and shown badly. People may still joke with it, but the joke sits on a nasty meaning; in real life it is an accusation.
組成lecher（舊詞，指貪戀女色的男人）+ -ous（充滿這種性質的）。更早來自古法語，說的是貪吃、貪慾；再往上可以接到一個也演成 lick（舔）的日耳曼根。今天英語裡 lecherous 只剩下「令人討厭的好色」，沒有「舔」的意思。
