    Lebanon is a country in the Middle East, on the Mediterranean Sea, between Israel and Syria. The capital is Beirut. For a long time it was thought of as rich and open: tourists came, and banks and traders used it as a centre. Then a long civil war in the 1970s and 1980s did terrible damage, as opposing political and religious groups fought, with Israel, Syria, and the involved. English often stops the story there. The name is still used in the news; the country has had more trouble since, and many Lebanese live abroad. In English we say the Lebanon in some older writing, but today most people just say Lebanon. It is a place name, always capitalised.

組成The country is named after a mountain range. That name comes from Biblical Hebrew ləḇānôn, from an old West Semitic root laban- meaning “white” (the mountains look white). You can compare Hebrew lāḇān, “white”, and Arabic laban, “milk”. In English the country name is Lebanon; the people are Lebanese.
