    Leavings are the things still there because nobody wanted them — scraps, bits, the last remainder. The word is almost always plural. After a meal, the leavings are the food left on the plates; a dog or a very hungry person might eat them. It can also be what is left of a job, a fortune, or a group of people, and then it can sound cold: you were given only the leavings. It is a little old-fashioned. For food, most people now say leftovers when the food is still good to eat later. Leavings hints that what remains is poor, unwanted, or already picked over. It is not the gerund leaving (going away).
