Leasehold property is property you “own” only for the years written in a lease. In Britain this is very common for flats: you buy the right to live there for 99 years, or 125, or even 999, but someone else still owns the land under it (the freeholder). When the years run out, the right can go back, though actually owners often pay to make the lease longer before that. The word can describe the home (a leasehold flat) or that kind of ownership. Taiwan’s everyday 所有權 is closer to freehold. Do not treat leasehold as the same as renting month by month — a leasehold is bought and sold like a home, but it is not forever.
