A lawless person does not follow the law. A lawless place is not really under the law — nobody in charge is stopping crime, or the rules have no bite. You hear it about gangs, towns after a disaster, and the old “Wild West” in stories. It is stronger than “a bit naughty”; it says there is no real control. News and films love it. Though actually, people also stretch it: a “lawless” night out may just mean wild and loud, not truly criminal — that use is looser and more playful. The serious use is the one about crime and missing order. It is not a legal term you write on a form; it is a judging word, often a little dramatic.
組成law + -less (without). From Middle English laweles. Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, and Icelandic have close cousin words with the same shape.
