    Allowed by law, or recognised by law as valid. A lawful owner is the person the law says owns something; a lawful arrest is one the police are allowed to make. It is a formal, legal-sounding word. Though actually, in everyday speech people more often say legal. There is a small flavour difference: legal is the ordinary opposite of illegal; lawful can also mean “right in the eyes of the law” in a slightly older or more moral tone. You still hear older set phrases such as lawful authority.

組成From Middle English laweful: law + -ful. It also mixed with an older Middle English word leful, leeful, leveful, which already meant “according to law.” On the surface today it is simply law + -ful.
