A toilet, or the room a toilet stands in. In British English this is the polite, slightly old-fashioned word you still see on signs in theatres, stations, and hotels. In everyday British talk, people more often say loo or just toilet. Though actually, in American English you almost only hear lavatory on a plane, for the small toilet at the back; at home Americans say bathroom or restroom. It is more formal than toilet, and much more formal than loo. Older speakers and official signs like it; young people in casual speech mostly do not.
