Laurasia is the name give to the great northern of the ancient world. The story goes like this: about 300 million years ago nearly all land on Earth was joined in one supercontinent, . Around 200 million years ago began to split, and it split into two — Laurasia in the north and Gondwana (or ) in the south. Laurasia later broke apart again into what we now call North America, Europe, and most of Asia, plus . So when scientists explain why the same kinds of old fossils turn up in Canada and in Scotland, Laurasia is the answer: those places were once one piece of ground. It is a proper noun, so it always takes a capital L, and it takes no "the" — you say "Laurasia broke apart", not "the Laurasia". The word belongs to geology, geography, and school science; it is not an everyday word, but any student reading about dinosaurs or continental drift will meet it.
