A basket that is where washing waits. Clothes drop into it when they come off, ride in it to the machine, and come back in it when they are dry. Whether it stands in a corner all week or goes down the twice a day, it is the place clothes sit between being worn and being put away.

Wiktionary records it simply as laundry plus basket. The word laundry itself covers washing both before and after it is done, which is why one compound stretches over a basket of dirty clothes and a basket of clean ones.
維基詞典只記了一句：laundry 加 basket。而 laundry 這個字本身就同時包含「要洗的」和「洗好的」，所以同一個組合字才能一邊蓋住裝髒衣服的籃子，一邊蓋住裝乾淨衣服的籃子。
