In US English, a Latino is a man whose family comes from Latin America — Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the many countries south of the US where Spanish or Portuguese is spoken. People say it about identity, not about whether the person still speaks Spanish. A woman is a . The plural Latinos can mean a group of men, or a mixed group of men and women; that is how English often uses it, even though Spanish would mark the mix in a more careful way. It is everyday US speech and also the word on forms and in the news. It is not a rude word, though actually many people would rather be called by their country — Mexican, Puerto Rican, Colombian — because Latin America is not one culture. Latino is not the same as Hispanic: Hispanic points to Spanish, so it can include people from Spain and usually leaves out Brazil; Latino points to Latin America, so it can include Brazil and usually leaves out Spain. Some younger writers use Latinx to avoid the male form; you will see it more in writing than you will hear it. Do not mix this up with Latin, the old language of Rome.
組成Not built from English pieces. It is a short form of Spanish latinoamericano, “Latin American.” US English started using it in the 1960s, around the same time people were using Anglo and Afro in a similar short way for other groups.
