1. 1

A lapwing is a smallish European bird, black and white, with a thin crest of feathers standing up on its head — a little combed into a peak. You see it on fields and wet , often calling as it flies. The flight looks a bit wild: it tumbles and changes direction. That leaping, signalling flight is why the old name was about leaping and winking (making a quick sign), not about wings at all. Though actually, the modern spelling lapwing looks as if it were lap + wing, and that is a folk story the spelling grew to match. The bird has wings, of course, but that is not how the name was born. Birdwatchers still say lapwing; many other people would just say “that bird with the crest.”

組成From Middle English lapwynge, lapwynke, and related spellings, from Old English hlēapewince, from hlēapan (“to leap”) + wincian (“to wink, make a sign”), from the manner of its flight. Cognate with West Frisian ljip. The modern form is influenced by folk etymology so that it resembles English wing.
