    Landwards means the same direction as : toward the land, away from the sea. It is used almost only as an adverb — they sailed landwards; the birds flew landwards. The extra s is the British habit you also see in towards and backwards. Americans usually say for both the describing word and the direction-word. If you need a describing word (the side), is the form both sides of the ocean prefer.
