This is not a person, even though it sits next to landowner and the letters look as if they might name one. Landownership is the fact of owning land, or the way land is held in a place — who has it, how much, under what rules. A newspaper might say landownership is passing from old families to companies. The ending -ship turns a person-word into a state-word, the same trick as in friendship or membership. You meet it in news, law, and history. Friends do not say it over lunch.
