1. 1

Lamaism is an old English name for the form of Buddhism common in Tibet, , and neighbouring lands. Someone built it from lama + -, as if the religion were simply ‘the system of lamas’. You will still find it in older books and encyclopaedias. Though actually, most scholars and Tibetan people themselves say Tibetan Buddhism instead. The faith is much larger than its priests, and Lamaism can sound like a label stuck on from outside, even a little . If you meet it, know what it pointed to — and know that Tibetan Buddhism is the kinder, clearer name now.

    喇嘛教(舊稱;現多說藏傳佛教)
