1. 1

A lama is a Buddhist teacher-priest in Tibet, , and nearby places — someone trained in that tradition, often a monk, sometimes a high teacher. The Dalai Lama is the most famous of the title; Dalai Lama is a title, not a family name. English borrowed the word from Tibetan, and it is the everyday term in news and school books. Though actually, do not picture the South American animal: that is , with two L’s. One L is the priest. They are not related, and a third , Spanish lama meaning é cloth, is a different word again.
