    The laity are all the people in a religious group who are not priests, ministers, or other clergy — the ordinary members. One such person is a layman or ; the laity is the whole group. You hear it most in church talk, in a fairly formal register. Though actually, English also stretches it: the laity can mean ordinary people as opposed to the experts, as when doctors write ‘for the medical laity’. The everyday way is ‘ordinary members’ or ‘people who are not priests’. It has nothing to do with lady, even though the letters sit close.
