Lairy is a British informal word for someone who is very loud and a bit too sure of themselves — shouting, showing off, taking up all the air in the room. A lairy night out is one that gets rowdy. People also call clothes lairy when they are flashy and ‘too much’. It is not a classroom word; you hear it in the UK, and sometimes in Australia, more than in American English. It is but not the harshest insult: more ‘what a show-off’ than a serious charge. Though actually, it is easy to mix up with leery, which looks similar. Leery now usually means wary or suspicious. Lairy is about volume and swagger, not about watching your back.
