If someone is laid-back, they are relaxed and they do not seem worried about things. A laid-back teacher does not fuss. A laid-back Sunday is slow and easy. The feeling is calm, not lazy in a mean way — though actually, if you call someone’s work laid-back, you might mean they are not trying very hard, so the tone matters. It began as United States slang. People said lay back in the late 1950s for leaning back and taking it easy; the adjective laid-back shows up in print in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The picture is probably someone sitting in a chair tipped backwards. It is informal and friendly, common in speech. Write it with a : laid-back.
