The making of milk by a woman's or a female animal's body — the process, and also the period of time it goes on for. It is the noun that goes with the verb , and like it, it belongs to medicine, nursing, and farming rather than to daily chat. You will see it in fixed phrases: a lactation consultant (a specialist who helps new mothers with feeding problems — a real job title in hospitals too), lactation room (a private room at work for expressing milk), and in dairy farming, a cow's 'lactation period', the months after when she gives milk. Because it names the process rather than the act of feeding, it can cover pumping, storing, and supply problems, not just a baby at the breast.
