Kyrgyzstan is a country in Central Asia, with no sea, sitting between China and Uzbekistan, and with Kazakhstan to the north. It used to be part of the Soviet Union and became independent in 1991. The capital is . A lot of the country is high mountain, so the picture people carry is horses, pasture, and a Turkic language, Kyrgyz. The name is literally “land of the Kyrgyz”: -stan is an old Persian piece meaning “place of”. It is a normal country name in news English — not slang, not fancy. Though actually, English speakers mix it up with Kazakhstan all the time, which is the much larger neighbour with a similar ending.
