A Kurd is a person from the Kurdish people. Most Kurds live in a mountain area that crosses several countries — mainly Turkey, Iran, and Iraq, and also Syria. Some live in Armenia and in a wide diaspora in Europe and elsewhere. They have their own language and culture, but they do not have one widely recognised country of their own. Though actually, “the Kurds” are not one simple block: there are different groups, and they do not all speak the same way or want the same political future. In English, Kurd is the person; Kurdish is the adjective or the language. The word has been in English since about 1600, from Kurdish and Persian. Where the older word comes from, scholars do not really know.
