A Krugerrand is a South African gold coin. People buy it to own gold, not to spend like ordinary shop money. The front shows Paul Kruger, an old president of the South African Republic, and the name sticks his name onto rand, which is South Africa’s everyday money. Though actually, you do not walk into a café and pay “one Krugerrand for coffee”: the coin’s real price follows the gold inside, which goes up and down, far above any small number printed as a face value. Collectors and people who keep gold know it well; in ordinary chat you will mostly meet it in news about gold, or in stories about hidden wealth. It is a proper name, so it is often written with a capital K.
