    The rand is the money of South Africa. Shops and banks write it R; international lists use ZAR, from an older Dutch name for South Africa. One rand splits into 100 cents, like a dollar, though a rand is worth much less than a US dollar. South Africans often leave the word unchanged in the plural — “fifty rand” is the usual shape, though “rands” is not wrong. Some neighbouring countries use it too, or keep their own money in step with it. The name is not a made-up bank word: it comes from the Witwatersrand, a long ridge of rock by Johannesburg. That ridge held a huge amount of gold, and the money was named after it. Though actually, English already had an older rand meaning an edge or rim; the word for a ridge is that same old piece. You do not need the older meaning to spend the money, but it is why the name sounds the way it does. Everyday in South Africa; in the rest of the world it turns up in news about prices and exchange rates.
