A kook is a person other people think is silly, odd, or a bit crazy. It is informal American English — fine with friends, not for a school essay. It can sound almost warm (“a kook”) or sharp (“don’t listen to that kook”). Though actually, among kook has a harder job: it means a beginner who gets in the way or does not know the rules. That use is an insult. In ordinary talk it is just “weird person.” It is not a swear word, but it can still hurt if you say it to someone’s face.

組成It does not split into pieces you can still hear. It possibly comes from cuckoo, the bird, because people have long used “cuckoo” to mean “a bit mad.” That “possibly” matters — it is a good guess, not a sure family tree.
