Kimberley is a city in South Africa, in the north of what was called Cape Province. It became famous because diamonds were found there, and it grew into the centre of that mining country. The huge hole left by the old digging is still what many visitors picture when they hear the name. Though actually, Kimberley is also an English place name, and a spelling of a given name (often Kimberly in American English) — but this entry is the South African city. It is a proper name, so it takes a capital letter. You meet it in geography, history, and anything about diamonds.
