Kilted belongs to kilt. A kilt is a thick skirt, usually of tartan — cloth with crossing lines and squares in set colours. Scottish men have long worn it as traditional dress, with deep folds at the back. Though actually, you will see women in kilts too now, and pipe bands far from Scotland. When we call a person kilted, they are wearing one. When we call a skirt kilted, it is made with those folds, like a kilt. The word is a little old-fashioned: you meet it in writing about Scotland, ceremonies, and dance, more than in everyday talk.
