A kilt is a thick skirt, usually made of tartan — wool with a pattern of crossing lines and squares in family or clan colours. It is the traditional dress of Scottish men, worn with a belt and often a small bag at the front. In Scotland it is real clothing for weddings, dancing, and some uniforms, not only a tourist costume, though cheap copies exist. A true kilt is not just “any skirt a man might wear”: it is a special wrap of cloth, folded into many thin folds at the back. Irish kilts exist too, and women may wear tartan skirts, but when English says “a kilt” it almost always means that Scottish men’s piece of clothing. Though actually, the word began as a verb meaning to tuck clothes up around the body; the skirt is the cloth you have tucked. You may still meet that verb in older writing. Everyday English uses kilt as the noun.
組成It does not split into living English pieces. From Middle English kilten, “to tuck up,” probably from Old Norse kelta / kjalta, “skirt” or “lap.” The piece of clothing is named from that tucking-up.
