A kiln is a special oven, built to get far hotter than a kitchen oven. People use it to bake clay until the clay becomes hard: pots, cups, tiles, and bricks all go into a kiln. Some kilns dry things, or change them with strong heat — wood, lime, and other materials in workshops and factories. The heat is the point, and the work is slow and careful, not like toasting bread at home. You will hear this word in pottery class, on building sites, and in factories, not in ordinary cooking. Though actually, many English speakers almost drop the last sound and say it like “kill,” even though the word is written with an n. Some people do say the n. The spelling has probably pushed the n back into the way some of us talk.
組成It does not split into living English pieces. From Middle English kilne, from Old English cyln / cylen, “a large oven,” from Latin culina, “kitchen” or “kitchen stove.” In English, an old -ln- in the middle of a word often became -ll, as in mill; kiln kept a spelling with n. People who say it with n may be following an older sound, or simply reading the letters.
