Kickboxing is a fight sport in which you punch, like boxing, and you also kick. People do it in a ring with gloves and rules, and many gyms teach it as hard exercise, not only as a public fight. The word is everyday now; you will see it on gym doors. Though actually, English did not simply stick kick and boxing together at home. The name was borrowed from Japanese キックボクシング (kikkubokushingu), which itself was built from English kick + boxing. A Japanese businessman, Osamu Noguchi, may have coined it in 1964. In loose talk a gym may call almost any kick-and-punch class kickboxing, even when the style is closer to something else.
