A keypad is a small block of buttons you press to put numbers or simple commands into a machine. It is not the whole keyboard — just that little pad of keys. The number block on the right of many computer keyboards is a keypad; so is the set of buttons on a phone, an ATM, a microwave, or a door lock where you type a code. On a phone with a screen, people still sometimes call the on-screen number buttons a keypad. Older people may think first of a plastic box of buttons; younger people still use the word for the same job on a glass screen.
