A ketch is a sailing boat with two masts. The front mast is the tall one. The back mast is shorter, and it stands in front of the part that steers the boat. That last detail matters, because another two-mast boat, a yawl, looks similar until you see that its tiny back mast sits behind the steering. A schooner is different again: on a schooner the back mast is the big one. So “two masts” is not enough; ketch is a particular shape of two. Ketches are not huge . They are small or middle-sized working and cruising boats. Fishermen used them, and people still sail them for travel, because two sails can be easier to handle than one giant sail when the wind is strong — though actually sailors argue about that, and plenty of people just like how a ketch looks. You will meet the word in harbours and boat books, not in everyday city talk. It is said like the ketch in ketchup, and it has nothing to do with sketch.
組成From Middle English catche, from the old verb cacchen, “to catch.” The modern vowel is like the way some people say catch.
