Karaoke is an entertainment: you sing a well-known song while a machine plays the music and shows the words, usually on a screen. The singer’s own voice is live; the band is missing — that is the joke of the name. People do it at a party, in a bar, or in a private room with friends. Though actually, in many places the room-with-friends version is what people picture, not a lonely person on a public stage. English uses karaoke as a noun (do karaoke, a karaoke night, a karaoke machine) and sometimes as a verb (to karaoke), though the noun is far more common. It is a casual, fun word, not a school word. The activity came into English from Japanese, and it spread worldwide.

From Japanese カラオケ, from 空 'empty' + オケ, a clipping of オーケストラ 'orchestra'.
