Kandahar is a city in southern Afghanistan. It is the second-largest city in the country — though actually, that “second” still means a big, busy place, not a small town. is the capital in the east; Kandahar is the great city of the south, on old trade roads. For many years the Taliban treated it as their spiritual home: the place their movement felt it belonged, not just another city they held. You will see the name in news about war, in talk about Afghan , and in older history, because this spot has been important for a very long time. English spelling stays Kandahar; people sometimes say it with the stress on the last part.
