Alexandria is a city and port in Egypt, on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Alexander the Great founded it in the fourth century , and it took his name. In ancient times it was one of the great centres of learning: it had a famous library, and important people came there to study. It was a meeting place of Greek, Egyptian, Jewish, and later Christian and Muslim life — not only a Greek city sitting on Egyptian land. Today it is still a large Egyptian city and a working port, not just a ruin in a history book. In English, Alexandria by itself usually means this Egyptian city, unless another place is named; the United States has cities called Alexandria too. When people say the library of Alexandria, they mean the ancient library, which was lost.
