Jutland is the big peninsula in northern Europe — a long piece of land with sea on three sides — that makes up most of mainland Denmark and a little of northern Germany. Danes call their part Jylland. The name means the land of the Jutes, an old Germanic people. Though actually, many English speakers meet the word first in a history lesson: the Battle of Jutland, in 1916, was a huge sea fight in the First World War, off this coast, between the British navy and the German navy. It is a place name, so we write it with a capital J.
