Jute is a plant fibre: the long, strong threads you get from the stem of the jute plant. People spin it into rough brown cloth and into rope, string, and the sacks that hold rice or coffee. It feels coarse, not soft like cotton, and it is cheap and strong, which is why so many bags are made from it. Most of it is grown in South Asia, especially around Bangladesh and eastern India. Though actually, the English word was taken from Bengali. It is not related to the old European people called the Jutes, even though the two words look the same on the page.
