A joyride, in the sense the news and the law care about, is this: someone takes a car that is not theirs — steals it, or drives it with no right to — and then drives it fast and wildly for the thrill, not to keep the car and not because they need to get somewhere. It is not a gentle word in police or newspaper English. Though actually, people stretch it. Friends may call any , slightly wild trip in a car “a joyride” even when nobody stole anything. That looser use is informal and playful. The core meaning, the one this word is filed under, is still the stolen-car kind: fun for the driver, danger for everyone else, and against the law.
