Joyous means very happy, or likely to make people very happy. It sits close to joyful, and in many sentences you could swap them and nobody would mind. Though actually, joyous often likes events, news, and occasions a little more than faces: a joyous celebration, joyous news, a joyous day. Joyful sits a bit more easily on people and feelings, but the overlap is huge — do not treat them as two different ideas. Both are warmer and bigger than just “happy.” Joyous can sound a touch more formal or storybook. You hear it in writing, speeches, and songs more than in quick chat, where happy or glad will do.
