1. 1

If something is joyless, there is no happiness in it at all — not a little, not hiding in the corner, none. A joyless job, a joyless meal, a joyless house: the word is strong. People reach for it when life or an event feels empty and grey, not merely “not very fun.” It is more at home in writing and serious talk than in quick chat. Though actually, it does not always mean someone is crying or angry. Sometimes it means the fun has been taken out, and what is left is only work, habit, or a smile that does not mean anything. It describes people, places, and stretches of time.
