If someone speaks or acts jovially, they do it in a friendly, cheerful way — a laugh in the voice, a warm offer, an easy greeting at the door. Same slightly old-fashioned, slightly written feel as jovial. Teenagers rarely reach for it; stories and polite description still do. It tells you how the thing was done, not that the person is a clown.
