Jollity is when people are happy and enjoying themselves — the cheerful mood in the room, the laughter and good spirits. The jollity of the wedding feast. It is a rather old, noun. It does not mean one joke; it means the whole happy atmosphere, and it can also name merry events themselves. There may be no jokes at all, just warm, cheerful people. Though actually, jolly as an adjective (a jolly evening) is still alive in British English, especially with older speakers; jollity the noun has further back into stories and formal descriptions. American speakers use jolly less in daily talk, so they meet jollity even less. For a student, happy fun or a cheerful atmosphere will almost always do; jollity is the dressed-up word for the same feeling. It is a noun, not an adjective: you can have a jolly evening, and you enjoy the jollity.
