A jihadi is a Muslim who is fighting a holy war — in English, someone in a militant Islamic movement who takes part in jihad in the fighting sense, not someone quietly struggling to live a good life. Though actually, not every Muslim who talks about jihad is a jihadi; this person-word is tied to the war meaning. It is also an adjective: a jihadi group, jihadi violence. It is a news-and-politics word, not kitchen talk, and it has been in occasional English use since the 1960s. Some writers prefer jihadist; in English the two now mean much the same. Be careful: it labels people. Inside a group it can sound like praise; outside, it is usually a charge.
組成jihad + -i, after Arabic جِهَادِيّ (jihādiyy). Both the noun and the adjective have been in occasional English use since the 1960s.
