1. 1

Jewry means the Jewish people as a group, or the Jewish community of a place or a time. You meet it in history books: medieval Jewry, European Jewry, American Jewry. It is not a word for one person, and it is not how friends talk; it is formal, a little old, and useful when you are writing about a whole community. English also kept it in place names — Old Jewry in London was once the Jewish — where it names a street, not a people, any more. Do not mix it up with jewellery, which is spelled nearby and means something completely different.
